Officials from the Department of Education have initiated negotiations with the landowner for the site of a new school for St Teresa’s Special School in Ballinasloe.
The school has hit the headlines recently after a major insurance hike and a threat of a lawsuit being taken by the parents against the Department of Education.
The school is presently accommodated at the Ballinasloe Enterprise Centre at Creagh and parents say they can’t afford to pay insurance costs which have risen form €3,000 to over €20,000 this year.
A site for a purpose built school was identified early last year but no progress had been reported since.
Roscommon Galway Deputy Denis Naughten says he’s been told the Department has begun negotiations with the owner of the site, although they are at an early stage.
Deputy Naughten is welcoming the progress, and says he’s also spoken directly with the Minister with a view to resolving the insurance cost issue in the meantime.
