Portiuncula Hospital ICU patients greet therapy dog ‘Cody’ with a smile

Patients in the ICU at Portiuncula Hospital, Ballinalsoe are receiving extra care and attention with a special weekly visit.

Cody, a 6 year-old Golden Retriever is a volunteer with Irish Therapy Dogs, he visits the unit every Thursday with his owner Gary.

Charlotte Carter, Clinical Nurse Manager, ICU says they initiated pet therapy as a non medical intervention for the mind and body and to create a more humanised environment for ICU patients and their families along with staff.


She says Cody’s having a great effect on patients.
