Pope Francis appoints Kildare priest as new Bishop of Achonry

Pope Francis has announced the appointment of Fr Paul Dempsey from Newbridge in Kildare as the new Bishop of Achonry.

The position has been vacant since 2017 when Bishop Brendan Kelly was appointed as the new Bishop of Galway.

The Roman Catholic Diocese covers twenty-three parishes in Roscommon, Mayo and Sligo, and it’s cathedral of The Annunciation and St Nathy is located in Ballaghaderreen.


The Ballaghaderreen area is one of the largest  Roscommon areas in the Diocese  and the Papal Nuncio is saying mass in the cathedral this morning to mark Catholic Schools week.

Bishop-elect Paul Dempsey is also attending the mass.

He’s a native of Carlow and was ordained to the priesthood in 1997.
