Politicians slammed over Ballagh factory demolition work

Demolition work is taking place at the Dawn Meats factory in Ballaghaderreen that used to employ 240 people.

Nearly ten years ago, the thriving plant closed, with its operations moving to nearby Ballyhaunis, in what was a major jobs blow to west Roscommon.

Over the past month, residents have noticed considerable activity at the factory in the Sligo Road.

Dawn Meats, which still owns the site, says a small amount of demolition work is under way to ensure the site is safe and secure.

However, it adds it isn’t a sign of anything significant happening.

Ballaghaderreen resident Michael Scally, a former councillor, has slammed local politicians for their failure to find an alternative employer for the site.
