PNA rep: Closure of Rosalie unit ‘immoral’

The possible closure of the Rosalie unit has been described as ‘immoral’ by a nurse who used to work there.

Families of residents of the Castlerea facility were told yesterday the HSE sees no future for the 30-bed facility, which now accommodates only 13 patients.

A well-attended meeting last night heard that a protest would be stage unless the HSE reverses its decision to move the patients to facilities in Ballinasloe and Castlebar.

Breege Callaghan, the Psychiatric Nurses’ Association regional organiser, says what’s happening in Castlerea is totally wrong.

The meeting heard the only way the facility can be saved is through a political decision.

Local councillor Paschal Fitzmaurice was pleased to see politicians for all sides agree they will oppose any efforts to shut the doors.
