Neighbours and colleagues wish Fr. Duignan well on new role as Bishop of Clonfert

The people of south Roscommon and county are wishing well the new Bishop of Clonfert, Father Michael Duignan.

The appointment of the Bealnamullia native was announced this morning at St Brendan’s Cathedral in Loughrea, replacing Bishop John Kirby, also from the area who is retiring at the age of 80..

Fr Michael has lectured in Theology at Saint Angela’s College, Sligo – he has also been serving as Chancellor and Diocesan Secretary and Financial Administrator at the Diocese of Elphin.

He also worked on the amalgamation of the two Athlone schools, St Aloysious and Summerhill to become Colaiste Chiaran.

Chairperson of the Board of Management Frank Smith says he was key to the project knowing as a past pupil of St Aloysious, the sensitivities involved.

Neighbour Pat Watson says it’s a proud day for the whole community.
