The National Parks and Wildlife Service is being asked to prepare a report on the status of Lough Funshinagh as a Special Area of Conservation.

Since flooding in 2015, 2016 and 2017, waters have not receded and a recent study by the Geological Survey of Ireland has found that is rises five time more quickly than it's capacity to drain.

Despite a relatively dry summer so far waters continue to rise, and as of yesterday, water levels are now 2 meters higher than they were a year ago.

A cost benefit analysis on draining the flood plane with a pipe, has not taken into account 120 hectares of local farmland that is not usable and farmers are still restrained by environmental restrictions in their applications for government farming schemes.

Local Councillor Laurence Fallon says for that reason and to restore any degree of plant and wildlife the NPWS needs to reassess the area.
