Minister Naughten has announced Government funding of €6million to remove pinch points on the River Shannon

Minister Denis Naughten has announced that Government funding of €6million will be invested to remove 18 pinch points on the River Shannon.

He also confirmed that the Meelick Weir north of Lough Derg will also be removed

The investment, which is spearheaded by Kevin ‘Boxer’ Moran, is the most significant work to take place on the River Shannon and will have a dramatic impact on the potential flooding in the Shannon Callows south of Athlone.

Funding will also be provided for major cleaning works of tributaries of the Shannon with works expected to get underway next spring.
