Full construction work on the €1.4-million refurbishment of St Nathy’s Cathedral in Ballaghaderreen will begin on Monday.
Last Sunday the church held its final Mass before the project begins, and this week Kilcawley Construction, from Sligo, began preparatory work on the site.
The cathedral will be closed until the end of March, during which time services will be held in the chapel in St Nathy’s College in the west Roscommon town.
The cathedral will, however, open for the Christmas period.
The essential construction work on the listed building, which was built in the 1850s, will include roof and pipe repairs and a general redecoration.
Brendan Henry is the managing director of Kilcawley Construction, the chosen contractor.
