Local presidential candidates lose out in Roscommon Council nominations

Roscommon presidential candidates John Groake and Marie Goretti Moylan have lost out in securing nominations from their local council.

Within the last hour Roscommon Council has revealed that Sean Gallagher, Senator Joan Freeman and journalist Gemma O’Doherty have all been nominated.

The trio were among 8 hopefuls who addressed councillors yesterday.

Businessman Sean Gallagher received the backing of three councillors Tony Ward, Paddy Kilduff and John Keogh. Joan Freeman was nominated by Dominick Connolly and Joe Murphy while Gemma O’Doherty was nominated by Paschal Fitamaurice.

Although Athlone woman Marie Goretti Moylan is believed to have impressed councillors with her speech it wasn’t enough to secure the all important nomination.

Sean Gallagher already looks set to secure a nomination from Leitrim Council next week.

Each prospective nominee needs to gain the support of four councils to enter the presidential race.
