LISTEN: Protesting eel fishermen hope government can access EU fund to provide compensation

Eel fishermen from the Shannonside region are hoping that they may finally get some real compensation if they can get the government to access European funds set aside for the industry.

A new Association of Irish Eel Fishermen has been founded in recent days and a protest was held by some former fishermen at the bridge in Tarmonbarry today to highlight their frustration over lack of progress since they were told to stop fishing for eels ten years ago.

Brendan Cuffe from Ballymore in Westmeath who was also protesting at the bridge today says he and his four sons were all left without a livelihood ten years ago and were never offered any real compensation …
