LISTEN: Local TDs express anger and frustration at handling of Covid crisis in meat factories

Opposition TDs from across the Shannonside Northern Sound region have expressed their frustration with the government’s response to outbreaks of Covid-19 in meat plants

The Dáil heard claims during a special debate last night that a cloud of shame is hanging over the meat processing industry over how it’s treated workers.

Ministers Heather Humphreys and Michael Creed spent almost two hours answering questions from across all sides in relation the government’s handling of the Covid-19 crisis in meat factories last night.

The government is insisting the proper regulations are in place to allow meat factories operate within health guidelines but Independent TD for Roscommon-Galway Michael Fitzmaurice said issues persist

Sinn Fein TD for Cavan Monaghan Matt Carthy claimed that meat factories were operating to different rules to other industries :

There was concern expressed that the Ministers were unable to tell deputies how many, or where, Health and safety authority inspections of meat facilities had taken place:

The National Public Health Emergency Team is meeting today to discuss how Covid-19 is spreading in meat plants and nursing homes.
