Figures from the National Youth Council of Ireland show there are just over 400 young people in the Shannonside region on apprenticeship programmes.
The highest amount is in Roscommon were 191 young people are working on some kind of apprenticeship projects. 144 young men and women are taking part in apprenticeships in Longford at present, and the figure for Leitrim is 91.
The Youth Council says more money is needed in the forthcoming budget to support bigger numbers of young people to go into apprenticeship or other employment and training measures to reduce long term unemployment. The council says it also found that young women account for just 2% of the apprentices in Ireland at the moment.
