Hundreds of farmers from across the Shannonside region are taking part in a large demonstration outside the Dail this afternoon.
They’ve joined thousands of their counterparts to highlight what they describe as their “grave concern” at the state of the beef industry and the recently signed Mercosur deal.
Padraig O’Connor, chairman of Beef Plan Roscommon, who travelled to Dublin on one of four buses from the county says farmers are now at rock bottom.
Padraig, who farms in Knockcroghery, told Shannonside FM farmers feel they’ve been sold out, not only by their own Government but by Europe as well.
He described the Mercosur deal as “the last straw” with prices already on the floor for beef.
He estimates up to 8,000 farmers have gathered outside the Dail for the lunchtime protest to vent their frustration.
