A Roscommon Fianna Fail councillor has joined over 50 fellow party councillors to form a new campaign group to defeat the proposed Programme for Government.

The process of selling the programme to members of Fine Gael, Fianna Fáil and the Greens will begin in earnest today.

Their parliamentary parties gave the go-ahead to the document last night, ahead of member votes over the next week and a half.

The group, calling itself Fairer Future, says it has 1,000 Fianna Fáil members signed up to campaign against the deal.

It says it had feared since the start of this process that a continuation of status quo politics would be acceptable to those negotiating this agreement and the publication of the programme for government had confirmed these fears.

Leitrim Councillor Mary Bohan has joined the group with Roscommon Councillor Orla Leyden publicly stating says she is really disappointed to see that this Programme for Government is just a series of reheated policies.

Councillor Leyden says as well as the the future of the movement being at stake, so too are the party's values of equality of opportunity, good housing, protecting the vulnerable and the prioritisation of education.
