HSE reminds people importance of eliminating infection by handwashing

People in the Shannonisde region attending hospitals are being urged to remember to clean their hands thoroughly.

The HSE has launched the Resist programme at three hospitals today, including Cavan General Hospital, Portiuncula Hospital, Ballinasloe and University Hospital Limerick. It’s to help reduce the spread of superbugs and the spread of infections among healthcare workers, patients and visitors. The HSE says that many infectious diseases are spread through microscopic amounts of faecal matter and people can avoid illnesses such as vomiting, diarrhoea, coughs, colds, sore throat, flu, in fact, virtually all infections if they wash their hands.

Professor Martin Cormican, HSE National Lead for Antibiotic Resistance was in Portiuncula Hospital for today’s launch.
