The HSE has confirmed that it expects to seek tenders for the building of a new 50 bed unit at the Sacred Heart Hospital in Roscommon in the coming weeks.

The Assistant National Director of Buildings with the HSE has informed Independent Councillor Tony Ward that the office is considering expressions of interest in relation to the project and is finalising tender documentation.

The correspondence states that it's hoped that it can begin an evaluation process of tenders in late September 2020, and a successful design team can be appointed shortly after that.

It's hoped then that the project can progress substantially next year in terms of design with a view to planning being sought for the new unit.

HIQA has indicated that it would not renew registration for the facility if the new building was not in place by the end of next year.

While acknowledging that the progress is been extremely slow, Councillor Ward says he's relieved that at least it is happening.
