Hospital campaigner urges people to be on guard over potential threat to services at Portiuncula

A Roscommon councillor is urging people in the Ballinasloe area to be on their guard about the future of services at Portiuncula hospital.

Councillor Valerie Byrne was speaking after a report published this week showed the Ballinasloe hospital as having the second highest mortality rate for heart attacks in the country. The general manager of the hospital has issued a statement this week saying they don’t believe the data is accurate, and they’ve made changes to ensure future reports reflect the true picture of deaths from heart attacks in the hospital.

Councillor Byrne, who was elected on the hospital issue, says the same kind of information was used to close a large part of services at Roscommon and Monaghan hospitals, and people in east Galway should be very wary of these reports.
