Searches underway in Roscommon and Leitrim investigating alleged tampering of horse passports

A number of searches are taking place in the Shannonside region in connection with the alleged tampering of passports and microchips of horses presented for slaughter.

The searches are taking place in seven locations nationwide, including in counties Roscommon, Leitrim, Sligo, Westmeath, and Kilkenny.

The searches are being led by the Garda National Bureau of Criminal Investigation assisted by officials from the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine and the Food Safety Authority of Ireland.

The sites being searched include farms, houses and a commercial premises and are part of ongoing enquiries into alleged deception offences involving the equine industry.
