It's hoped a new "Siege Cycleway" can be developed as an offshoot of the Athlone to Galway Greenway.

That's according to Roscommon Galway TD Denis Naughten.

Deputy Naughten said he'd like to see a new cycleway developed off the main Dublin to Galway route when it is completed, that would run from Athlone Castle to the site of the Battle of Aughrim.

The Roscommon based TD says there is huge tourism potential there to be developed.

Speaking to Shannonside Northern Sound he said it's the next logical step with funding having now come through for the new River Shannon crossing in the form of a new bridge in Athlone.
