Government to consider using spare capacity in private nursing homes

There are calls for the government to consider using spare capacity in private nursing homes to relieve overcrowding in the public system.

According to figures released to Fianna Fáil TD for Roscommon/Galway Eugene Murphy there’s been a drop of 27% in the number of beds in state-run nursing homes in the last six years in Sligo-Leitrim, the figure for Longford/Westmeath is 18% and Roscommon is 10%.

With emergency department overcrowding levels consistently about 400, hitting over 600 at the beginning of February, Deputy Murphy says not enough patients are being discharged into the right community or nursing home setting.

He says the government has an opportunity as part of the midterm review of the Capital Plan Capital Review to take action to help alleviate the pressure on both acute centres and state-run nursing homes.
