Gardai in the Shannonside region are warning householders of a new phone scam that is targeting broadband customers after a woman almost lost €5,000 in Roscommon recently.
Investigations are underway after the lady received a phone call from a man speaking poor English, who offered her an upgrade to her broadband for a fee of five euro.
She then downloaded an update on her computer that she believed would facilitate the internet upgrade and processed the five euro payment through her online banking profile on the computer.
This allowed the scammer to then attempt to withdraw the money but the transaction was stopped by the bank when they were alerted by the householder.
Crime Prevention officer in Roscommon-Longford Paul McDermott is urging people to be very careful with any offers over the phone or internet.
