Gardai in Strokestown are investigating after an elderly man was intimidated into removing cash from an ATM and handing it over to a stranger.
The incident occurred as the man was checking on vacant property for a neighbour on the 23rd of February.
He was approached by an individual in a silver jeep who told the elderly man that he needed additional lighting for the house.
After he gave two lights to the elderly man, the stranger then demanded €300 for the items which the elderly man paid over out of fear.
Subsequently, the thief then made his way into the vacant house and stole three bottles of whiskey before following the elderly man to his own home where he demanded cash.
When the elderly man said he did not have any, he was taken in the thief’s jeep to an ATM where he was forced to remove cash from his account and hand it over before being taken back to his own house by the thief.
