Full construction of the controversial waste-to-energy facility in west Roscommon began this morning.
Biocore Environmental started site-clearance work last November on the €8-million project at Ballinphuill, Castlerea, and this has now finished.
The next phase will see the construction of the anaerobic digester itself, which the company claims will generate enough electricity to power 6,000 homes.
This element was strongly opposed by the residents when it was going through the planning-permission stage in 2008.
