The first ever ordination of a Permanent Deacon in the Church of Saints Peter and Paul, Athlone took place this afternoon.
Athlone native Tony Larkin was joined by his wife and family at the ceremony which also included a large number of representatives of clergy and laity from parishes in the diocese of Elphin.
As part of his preparations for his ordination the Athlone man had to undertake a four-year intensive programme of academic study, and spiritual, human and pastoral formation.
Another Athlone man Martin Reidy from Kiltoom will also be ordained as a deacon on the 17th of this month.
Today’s ceremony was performed by Bishop Kevin Doran who says the appointments are a great boost for the church.
