Fair Deal rent income rules must be addressed

Former Cabinet Minsiter Denis Naughten has warned “whole streets” will become derelict if the Government does not reform how rental income on family homes is treated by the Fair Deal Scheme, according to the Sunday Independent.

Mr Naughten, whose vote the Government needs to pass the upcoming Budget, wants to radically change the Nursing Home Support Scheme means-tested rental income.

In a letter to the Oireachtas Health Committee, the former Communications Minister said the scheme is “effectively banning” older people from renting out their homes while they are in care.

It is understood he will raise these concerns in Budget negotiations with Finance Minister Pascal Donoghue.
