Three eel fishermen from Rathowen, Ballymore and Coosan Athlone staged a protest on the road bridge crossing at Tarmonbarry earlier today to highlight their anger at the lack of compensation for the industry.
The fishermen caused some disruption to cruisers passing under the bridge by walking up and down the bridge section of road for a time.
They three said they didn’t want to cause any serious problem but felt that it was one of the only ways they can try to bring awareness of the ongoing struggle by people in the eel industry to be properly compensated.
Eel fishing licences were withdrawn ten years ago and the three men protesting today say they and other members of their families all lost their livelihoods as a result.
John Brogan who had an eel smokehouse in Rathowen employing four people said he was offered just €8,000 in compensation over a three year period and that has been the same for everyone else.
