€7m funding announced for River Shannon flood relief works

The government has announced funding of a €7m to prevent flooding on large areas of the River Shannon.

The Office of Public Works has confirmed that the money will be put towards a program of maintenance works including removing constrictions or ‘pinch points’ on the bed of the River Shannon at the Callows Region between Athlone and Meelick Weir to improve the conveyancing of the River Shannon.

A public consultation is expected to be announced in relation to the works which it’s hoped will begin later this year.
