‘Cruel’ and ‘heartbreaking’: Family member hits out as resident moved from Rosalie unit

The removal of a long-term resident from the Rosalie unit in Castlerea today has been described as ‘cruel’ and ‘heartbreaking’.

The first of the 12 residents was due to leave the psychiatric facility today after the HSE decided to close it last week.

But a large number of protesters gathered outside to prevent a taxi from bringing the lady to an east Galway nursing home.

The taxi was at a standstill for up to hour before the protesters agreed to allow it leave after the gardaí intervened.

Protester Anita Flanagan, whose brother Dan Connaughton lives in the unit, is furious.

She has called on local Oireachtas members be more proactive in the campaign.
