Civil Defence may not be able to provide emergency cover at events

It’s hoped that crunch a meeting between HSE officials and the Department of Defence can resolve an issue surrounding ambulance and emergency cover by the Civil Defence.

The HSE has raised the prospect that civil defence officers may not be certified to provide pre-emergency support at community festivals and events from July 31.

Providing cover through other organisations could mean additional costs of up to €4,000 on community organisations, which may be too prohibitive and could see many events cancelled.

Defence Minister Paul Kehoe has confirmed to Roscommon-Galway TD Denis Naughten that a summit is to be held between the Department of Defence, local authority chief executives and the Pre-Hospital Emergency Care Council to address the issue.

Colm Croffy, the executive director of Irish Association of Festivals and Events, says while he’s hopeful a resolution may be reached, it will come at a cost.
