Castlerea firemen paid €87,000 since station closed

New figures show Roscommon County Council has paid Castlerea firefighters a total of more than €87,000 since the station closed.

The fire station, which had nine staff, shut in January 2017 because of staffing issues and has not reopened.

Yet details released under the Freedom of Information Act show six fire-fighters in the Castlerea brigade are continuing to be paid – despite not working.

They’ve been paid a total of €87,440 – an average of up to €14,600 each – but seven firemen were initially receiving payments after the closure.

Castlerea community activist Danny Burke is strongly criticising the news.
