Calls for local Special Needs Schools to be given special insurance status

There are calls for Special Needs Schools to be given special status when it comes to insurance.

St Teresa’s school in Ballinasloe has been hit with a 700% rise in insurance for the next school year, it will now have to pay 26,000 euro to the only company who provided a quote to the Board of Management.

There are 21 students in the school this year with more students seeking to enrol next year – while it will be able to pay the cost this year through fundraising, there are fears for the future viablility of such schools, if costs continue to rise.

Social Democat local election candidate Ken Campbell, whose daughter Emma attends St Teresa’s, says the situation now, where insurance companies deem special needs school as high risk, need to be addressed or schools will be forced to close.
