Bypass to present ‘huge challenge’ to Strokestown

A well-known Strokestown businesswoman has expressed concern about the impact the new bypass will have the area.

Caroilin Callery notes the effect similar road upgrades have had on other towns.

Yesterday the government gave approval for a major upgrade of the N5 between Ballaghaderreen and Scramogue.

The multimillion-euro project is to go to An Bord Pleanála for planning approval, while compulsory purchases of land are also to begin.

When the 35-kilometre stretch is complete, the villages of Frenchpark, Ballinagare and Tulsk will be bypassed, along with Strokestown.

Caroilin Callery, a director of Strokestown Park House, accepts she’s concerned about the impact it’ll have.

Shane Lynskey, the treasurer of Strokestown Community Development Association, is more optimistic.

Fianna Fáil TD Eugene Murphy has mixed views on the project.
