Boyle to host thanksgiving mass for departing Sisters of Mercy

A special mass is being held in Boyle tonight to pay tribute to the final five Sisters of Mercy based at the convent in the town who are leaving next week.

After almost 150 years, the Boyle Convent of Mercy is set to close next Friday with two nuns set to move to Sligo, two to Athlone and one moving to an elderly care centre.

The convent was established in 1875 and the historic setting near the Boyle River provided education to thousands of locals up until 2002 through it’s primary and secondary school facility.

Tonight a mass of thanksgiving takes place at 7.30pm in St. Joseph’s Church and are all welcome.
