Bord Gais tight-lipped over plans for Athlone power plant

Bord Gais says it is not making any comment on the development of a gas power plant in Monksland due commercial sensitivity.

Greener Ideas Limited, a joint venture set up between Bord Gáis Energy and Mountside Properties, has received planning for a a 100MW gas fired power plant in Monksland subject to 15 conditions.

It will include Engine Hall Building with height of just over 17 metres, which will hold 10 gas engines and a tank farm with 10 different large tanks.

In a statement to Shannonside FM news, Bord Gais Energy says that Greener Ideas Limited is exploring potential options include peaking plant assets, like the Athlone plant in Ireland, and other energy storage systems which would facilitate the growth of renewable projects, while also supporting the electricity grid.

It says that all of these projects are dependent on market structures and for reasons of commercial confidentiality, Bord Gáis Energy cannot comment on any project specifics.

A previous application by Mountside Properties for a similar project got the green light in 2008 but it was appealed to An Bord Pleanala, by the Bealnamulla Residents Association citing concern over potential emissions to be generated by the plant.
