Over 600 farmers stage protest in Ballinasloe over beef industry concerns

Around 600 farmers staged a protest in Ballinasloe last night outside meeting attended by the agriculture minister concerning the beef industry.

Members of the Beef Plan Movement marched in protest against the prices paid for beef ahead of the Irish Farmers Journal’s Beef Summit.

The group marched through the town with a horse and cart loaded with a coffin carrying the words “RIP Irish Beef Farmer”.

Over 1000 farmers in total attended the event at the shearwater hotel in the town, with concern raised over a number of topics such as beef returns, genetics in the BDGP scheme and the amount of money processors make from the fifth quarter of each carcass and grading machines in factories.
