The decision by the Longford Westmeath Education and Training Board to phase out the Vocational Training Opportunities Scheme in Longford is being harshly criticised by a local councillor.
The ETB has confirmed that due to what is described as a ‘dramatic decline’ in learner numbers for the VTOS scheme in Longford over recent years it has decided not to continue with the two year programme from September of next year.
It says VTOS is one programme among many options for learners in the county, and is part of a wider Further Education and Training programme within Westmeath and Longford.
Longford councillor Joe Flaherty says however that this latest development is clear evidence of the continuing phasing out of ETB services in the county.
He says the decision also flies in the face of the promises being made by government of a transition programme for Bord na Mona and ESB workers in Longford.
