Unions representing workers at Bord na Móna say talks with the company to save 72 jobs have reached an impasse

Unions representing workers at Bord na Móna say talks with the company to save 72 jobs at it’s Longford plant have reached an impasse.

The group, which is made up of SIPTU, Connect and UNITE unions, says discussions seeking alternative arrangements for the staff have failed due to the “ideological position” of the company.

Bord na Mona already layed off 78 seasonal workers following the decision by ESB to suspend operations at the nearby Lough Ree Power Plant, which it supplies.

Unions spokesperson, Willie Noone, says they won’t accept the company’s stance when alternative options are available.
