Tributes paid to former Longford councillor Michael Nevin

Tributes are being paid to former Longford councillor Michael Nevin who has died.

He served on both Longford County and town councils and was elected as Chairman of the county council in 1983.

He was one of the longest-serving members on the council having been first elected in 1979 and holding his seat on the authority with just one break, until 2009.

The local politician had been elected as a Sinn Féin representative, as well as for Fianna Fail, and latterly as an Independent.

The Longford town man was also instrumental in developing the Mall town centre as an amenity.

The Cathoirleach of Longford County Council says that while he didn’t serve with Michael Nevin, he knew him to have served his constituents with distinction:
