Tory MP with Shannonside links claims altered ‘backstop’ may not be accepted by UK politicians

A Conservative Party MP with strong family links to the Shannonside region believes any possible deal on an altered ‘backstop’ will not be accepted by opposition politicians in the UK.

Following Boris Johnson’s visit to Dublin this week, reports from inside the UK government have suggested that a compromise ‘Northern Ireland only backstop’ could be proposed to try and break the Brexit deadlock.

However, the measure would still need the support of a large majority of MPs in the House of Commons, including Labour MPs who have voted repeatedly against Boris Johnson administration


Maria Caulfield, whose father is from Longford, told the Joe Finnegan show that Labour want to oppose Brexit in all forms, and that may scupper any potential deal
