Republican prisoner defends ”right to protest against prison regime”

A Republican prisoner from County Longford is defending his ”right to protest against the prison regime in the future” as he sees fit.

It follows reports that Donal Billings of St. Bridget’s Court in Drumlish is on hunger strike following a dispute with fellow inmates.

Billings is serving time at Portlaoise prison for planting an explosive device at Longford railway station during the Queen’s visit to Ireland in 2011.

Billings is being represented by the Irish Republican National Congress and in a statement says discussions are ongoing with a view to returning him to the E block.
