A school in Longford is hoping to lead the way in banning the use of single-use cups this week when an outright ban on the plastic or paper containers will come into force.
Mean Scoil Mhuire, which has over 500 pupils is encouraging all students and staff to bring re-usable cups for hot and cold drinks from this Friday.
They made the decision last December with full agreement from pupils, with an estimated 75 single-use cups used every day, at a cost of€50 euro per week to the school.
The decision follows an announcement from the Environment Minister that all Government departments will be prevented from purchasing single-use plastic cups, cutlery and straws
