OPW Minister says agency will help in Mill river clean-up

OPW Minister Kevin Boxer Moran says he has given the go ahead for the agency to help Longford Council in carrying out a clean-up operation following flooding of the Mill river at the weekend.

The river broke its banks in a number of areas in the north of the county during torrential rain last Saturday and some houses and businesses were under threat for a time.

Kevin Boxer Moran says he walked the area with council officials yesterday and he saw for himself the damage caused by the flooding.

He says that in addition to the clean up, the OPW is giving the council the go ahead to carry out a study of the area in terms of bridges and roads that could be affected by any future flooding events and its hoped that can be finished in a short time in order to draft a plan for flood defences.
