One year since Abbeyshrule air tragedy

Today marks the first anniversary of a fatal plane crash at Abbeyshrule airfield in Co Longford.

William Hillick, who was in his forties died, on March 20th last year when the stunt plane he’d bought just a month earlier crashed.

Mr Hillick from Mullingar had been performing a series of aerobatic manoeuvres above the airfield and a witness reported seeing it descending rapidly towards the ground, impacting in a nose-down attitude.

The Air Accident Investigation Unit said two GoPro cameras were fitted to the single-seater Laser Z200 and initial checks showed the majority of the 15-minute flight had been recorded.

The unit has yet to publish it’s final report on the accident and it’s not yet known when it will be finished.
