The future of a tourism group promoting businesses in this region is in doubt after the loss of €75,000 in state funding.
Mid-Ireland Tourism helps small businesses in a number of counties in the midlands, including Longford, south Roscommon, Westmeath and Athlone town.
It’s funding was stopped after the state body Pobal told the subscription-based organisation to exit a community services scheme under which it had been receiving money.
The move has left the future of the group, which has around 30 members in this region and employs three people, in a precarious position, according to manager Peter Ormond.
The board of Mid-Ireland Tourism had a positive meeting last night, he said, to discuss the situation but he says that funds are running low.
