Man believed to be from Longford injured in incident outside Galway church

A man, believed to be from the Longford area, was injured in an incident outside a church in Galway on Sunday afternoon.

Gardai have confirmed they are investigating a number of incidents outside the Holy Family Church in Mervue in Galway shortly after 3pm.

A man in his 30s received a gunshot wound to the leg and was treated in University Hospital Galway while a second man in his late teens received a stab wound to the back and was taken to University Hospital for treatment.


A third man received minor injuries in an assault on Walter Macken Road which is also under investigation.

At 3.30pm a teenage boy was arrested on Walter Macken Road for possession of an offensive weapon. He has since been released and has been cautioned under the Juvenile Diversion Programme.


A large Garda presence is expected at a funeral in Ballymacormack cemetery outside Longford town today.

It’s understood the funeral is taking place at noon.

Motorists are being warned to expect delays in and around the cemetery for the duration of the funeral.
