A major operation is to begin later this evening to remove chewing gum from the main streets of Longford town.
Longford council has committed €20,000 to the project which involves the co-operation of the local Tidy Towns group and Chamber of Commerce.
Weeds in the town have already been sprayed as part of the process, and some buildings will also be given attention.
Local Fianna Fáil councillor Seamus Butler says this “deep clean” of Longford town is one of the most serious initiatives ever undertaken in the urban area.
