Low uptake of people accepting the Government’s offer to move away from flood prone areas

The Minister for the OPW has told the Dail that the reason so few people have taken up a Government offer to move away from flood prone areas in the Shannonside region
is – they simply don’t want to move.

A relocation scheme was announced by the government in 2016, with several householders in the Shannonside region expected to take part in the multi-million euro initiative.

In April of 2017, it was announced that €2million funding would be made available for people looking to move away from areas which had been badly affected by heavy floods in 2015, which hit south Roscommon, Carrick-on-Shannon and Athlone, as well as other areas.


However, it was revealed by Minister Kevin Boxer Moran in the Dáil that from 130 applications, just over 30 families have taken up the offer.
