Longford’s unemployment figure rises in February as Leitrim’s and Roscommon’s drops

An additional 33 people were on Longford’s live register last month compared to figures for January.

In contrast, Roscommon and Leitrim recorded slight drops in the number of people unemployed in February.

CSO  figures for February reveal that 2008 people are currently unemployed in county Leitrim – a drop of just six on figures for January – but a reduction of over 300 compared to the same month last year.


Roscommon also saw a small drop in its live register stats for last month – ten fewer people signed on in the county in February compared to January – leaving the county’s total unemployed figure at 2,525 – representing a drop of 299 people unemployed in the space of twelve months.

However, Longford saw a significant rise in the number of people seeking work in the county last month – it’s live register figure rising by 33 to push the total unemployed in the county to 2,970.

Despite February’s rise, compared to the same month in 2017, there has been a drop of 14 percent in the county’s unemployment total.

Athlone’s live register figure also saw a jump last month with an additional 41 people on the live register compared to January – with staff at the intro office now processing 2408 social welfare payments last month.
