Longford woman whose mother faces Council rent increase angry at local politicians

There are fears Longford council tenants could be evicted because they’re unable to pay their big rent increases.

The local authority has just completed its first rent review in ten years and many households are facing big rises.

Margaret Kenny’s 84-year-old mother has a serious heart condition and has lived in a council house in Lanesboro for the past 17 years.

Though her only income is an old-age pension of €242 a week, her weekly rent has risen from €27.50 to €45 a week.

The council says a tenant can appeal against their rent if they are experiencing hardship on severe medical grounds.

But Margaret is furious, especially with local representatives.
